Organizational History

Overview

Peoplestown Revitalization Corporation, Inc. (PRC) was incorporated in December of 1991 and granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 1992. The organization grew out of several long-standing community interest organizations active since the Model Cities era, including the Emmaus House, the Peoplestown Advisory Committee, and the Peoplestown Reunion. Membership is comprised of 150 persons, most of who reside in the community. A seven-member board of directors governs organizational activities carried out by a six person staff complement of employees and consultants, headed by an executive director. PRC's strategic priorities since 1992 have been the provision of employment opportunities for neighborhood residents, promoting positive community attitudes, and improving the physical condition of the neighborhood. These have led to specific housing, economic, and community development projects and programs. Since its inception, PRC has emphasized strong resident and community involvement in decision making. Its monthly meetings are open to the public.

Goals and Objectives

Organizational strategic planning efforts have led to the identification of six major objectives that guide Peoplestown Revitalization's commitment to innovative, community stabilizing neighborhood revitalization strategies. They are to:

  1. Strengthen the board, staff and overall organizational management skills in order to more effectively undertake program activities.
  2. Increase the availability, affordability and quality of rental, home improvement and home ownership opportunities for current residents, and those desiring to move.
  3. Reaffirm Peoplestown as a stable "community of choice" through community development and public safety activities that facilitate a clean, safe and crime-free community;
  4. Diversify and strengthen the resource base that supports Peoplestown Revitalization strategies and programming thereby ensuring their continuing implementation and delivery as well as optimizing Peoplestown Revitalization's uniqueness and market niche.
  5. Pursue more aggressive community outreach and marketing strategies and actions that result in greater resident involvement and increased partnerships that work collectively toward the realization of the Peoplestown Revitalization mission; and
  6. Provide or coordinate economic development activities for youth and adults, which lead toward creating a self-reliant, empowered community with lasting community change.
